Habits: Making and Breaking Them

Aristotle said “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

What kind of habits are you cultivating? The other night I saw a House episode where one of his patients was diagnosed as a habitual nose picker. The new girlfriend promptly left the exam room when he was diagnosed. Nose picking is a disgusting habit. It is repulsive, really. But, so are a thousand other habits people allow themselves to have everyday.

Look at yourself. What bad habits are affecting the quality and caliber of your life? What habits are you allowing to hold you back from becoming the person you are meant to be?

And by contrast, what great habits do you have that are leading you where you want to go—literally attracting (as opposed to repelling) the life you want to have and the person you want to become.

Bad habits die hard. Good habits are hard to ingrain. But you can kill and cultivate both. That is the fabulous thing about habits—and being human—you can DECIDE what habits to keep and what to kill or cultivate.

Perhaps we should look first at our choices. Are you doing what is easy instead of what is right or good or best? Why?
What do you need to do to become the person you want to be? I can guarantee it starts with choices and habits.

Every day I get up at 4:30 so I can exercise. Do I do it because I love to exercise? No. Do I love getting up at 4:30 in the morning? NO!! But I choose to do it because I know the compound effect of doing it is fitness, health and wellness. I hate to be sick or to not feel great more than I hate to exercise. I also hate to have a workout hanging over my head at the end of the day more than I hate getting up at 4:30 a.m. I made my choice and now I have habituated it. I feel weird when I don’t get up early and workout. It isn’t me. And I want to be the best me I can be, every day.

Only I can make these choices for me. Every day, with every act, I decide who I am going to be today in order to become the person I intend to be in the future.

Who are you supposed to be? Are your habits supporting the journey?

Make good choices. Strive for excellence. Love your future self.

Make it a great week.
