Choose Greatness!

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about greatness. Why does it matter? Is it worth the effort? What is the outcome of making choices and executing them in a disciplined, consistent way? How does choice and discipline serve you? How does it serve the world?

I have read several times now (and listened to it, too) a book by Deepak Chopra called The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of Your Dreams. The seventh law is about finding your purpose and using it to serve the world. This is so easy to say, and for some, it is so hard to identify. What I think is so interesting is that purposeless people are not happy. Sometimes we get caught up in having things and projecting outward—“When I have a mustang convertible, then I will be happy.” The fact is, the thing will never keep you happy. You will have temporary joy, but it will fade and you will have to look for the next thing outside yourself that you NEED to make you happy. The fact is, happiness is intricately linked to the ability to serve others and to contribute meaningfully to the world.

Last Monday I was feeling kind of low. Sometimes it is hard to know if I am making an impact of any kind in the world. Sometimes it’s just hard to sustain my energy when I wonder if what we do is recognized and appreciated.

When I walked into work and started settling in, a mommy thanked me for the swim school. WOW. How many business owners get thanked for creating their business?

Twenty minutes later, a mommy thanked me for the rose she got last week. She said she moved here from Arizona where she thought she took good swimming lessons, until she came to our school and realized how GREAT we are. WOW. She noticed the thought and intention behind the rose, thanked me for the T-shirt, too, and for having a great program.

An hour after that, an adult lesson asked me if I was the owner and proceeded to tell me what a great facility we have, how wonderful the staff is and how if it weren’t for our facility she would not have recovered from her surgery so quickly.

I guess I’ll keep going. And so should you. Good is our enemy. Great is our goal.

Keep choosing to be great. Remain consistent in your execution. See what LOVE can do.

Make it a great week.
